Chess Chat

Post by harry_rag » Fri May 15, 2020 11:29 am

Thought I'd better start a thread for this to stop everyone on the Brickies thread getting "board to pieces"! :)

Not that we'll be engaging in endless chatter about the intricacies of the game so much as somewhere we can do any "admin" without clogging up another thread.

He’s the king of the puns!

Somehow you managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory there, H. Stewards inquiry imo! :lol

Yeah, there would have been uproar if there had been a betting market on that one. Not sure I'd want to try and price up our next match at the moment, after 2 defeats.

Speaking of puns, I'm still disappointed this one didn't do better!

I watched two more last night, Wired. You don’t see many TV series with a necrophilia sub-plot!!
That's what you call a f***ing dead giveaway! :>

You’ll still be fav for every game we play. You’re a better player. That just makes this win even sweeter for me!

I think I chuckled to myself with that pun. It probably warranted a smiley face in all fairness.

Timmo smashed me in a couple of minutes. :>

I got revenge straight back though.

I think that app might be a bit shit, H. I love it’s lay out and how you have to submit your move, but it takes an age for it to appear on each other’s screen. I’d guess my average move time is about five seconds. I think it takes much longer for it to appear your end?

I think we just about needed two hands to count the moves!

Talk about humiliation! :lol

I find it ok bar the occasional long gap which could be down to either person's connection dropping briefly. I'll have a think about it, maybe see if there's an alternative that looks like it might be better. It's quite hard to tell normally whether it's a lag or just someone pondering. Maybe you need to chill a bit! :)

I’m getting five or six minute lags when either you or Timmo can only move to two possible squares. I put it down to you both overthinking things, but Timmo says it takes a while for my moves to come through, and I play super quick. A lag can be the only explanation imo.

And I have to refresh every time to see if you’ve moved or not!

I think part of the issue is the speed you prefer to play at and a degree of impatience (not a criticism, any delay will impact the natural rhythm of the game for you). Say, for the sake of argument, the server refreshes every minute at normal times. If you move just before, the move will show up instantly but if you move just after it will be at least a minute. I've got an idea, next time we play, you move as normal and I'll see how quick your moves come through. I'll move 30 seconds after your move comes through, you see how long it appears when you don't refresh. If we do the first 6 moves to that schedule we'll get a feel for what a normal passage of play looks like.

Obviously, if me and Timmo take longer over some moves that will feel like over-thinking to you but I'm certainly taking a bit longer over my moves now you've gone from novice to potential grandmaster! :)

Let's try that next game, we can fire the starting pistol on here then see how long we have to wait for the moves to appear.

That sounds overly complicated. Having googled it, it seems as though it’s quite a common occurrence in online chess.

We will carry on as we are. I will just get my knitting out in between moves.

:) Fair does, but I'll make a point of making my first few moves quicky and you try and keep your finger of the refresh button. I assume you're on an iPad rather than phone? I get a ping whenever you make a move (you can dance to the rhythm against you)!

Currently playing my ex-workmate who plays very slowly, you could never play a game against him, it would blow both your minds!

Somehow I've made a mistake you could never make in the real world; I intended to castle but just moved my rook and left the king where it was! {8

Surely you mean ‘all my minds’!

I haven’t tried castling for that exact same reason. :>

You can replay your own finished games but I don’t think there’s a way to see other people’s games. I’ll double check though.

Good game tho, one wrong move and it would’ve gone the other way.

I was disappointed to lose that game with so many good pieces left. I was a move away from an undeserved victory after thirty three moves, but you thwarted that with nicely moved knight. I’m not sure if you knew at the time how good a move that was.

Definitely felt like I had a little run just after that where I could’ve beat you.

Just played it back myself. At 38 I moved my queen ready to put you in check and your response was a pawn move on the other side of the board. I think the best move at that point would’ve been to castle, getting the king out of the way and moving the rook out to join your attack. Might have been a different game then.

Maybe the moral of recent games is I need to be wary of trapping my king when I castle and you need to consider more as an option.

I’m still not certain how to castle my king while playing online. I don’t want to try it and fook up then leave myself a bit stuck. I will have to try it in a game.

Just touch it as normal then move it 2 squares towards the rook, king goes there and rook the other side of it. If it doesn’t work you can press cancel instead of submit. The one time I messed it up I can only think I moved the rook instead.
