I agree with your comment about 1977, Col, and reckon you've picked the best one of the year. This was quite memorable at the time, so for the sake of offering something:

Hurry up harry, come on. :)

To be fair he has been busy duffing up some of the guys on the chess

:v: Duffing and getting duffed these days! Had a look earlier, Nick’s queered my Stranglers pitch (my first proper favourite band) so I just need to decide whether anything can trump the Pistols. GSTQ probably the best song and certainly the one that had the most seismic effect.

It doesn't fit my vibe right now but I have to go for this as it's a great song and It's easy to forget now how much of an impact this had in Jubilee year.

1978

Again a mixture of good and bad, what strikes me is the back catalogue of ELO. Always a fan of Jeff Lynne, and Roy wood going back further.

My selection for this year is more a memory, Picture it.
Me and my mates in a very busy pub, enjoying a pint or two.
As usual for a thursday night, top of the pops was on the TV.

When this track came on, the whole bar went silent, and the pints placed back on the bar.

Blondie - Denis

I'm getting the distinct feeling that the top 10 isn't a true representation of how good a year might have been, especially for punk and new wave where loads of records obviously didn't quite go that high (gutted that I can't post Gary Gilmore's eyes by the Adverts). I have to post this as it towers above everything else for me and I still think it's one of the all-time great debut singles. Toyed with Patti Smith and the Banshees but it's a double dose of Mr Lydon for me.

Haven't looked but does Polly Styrene qualify for this year? Germ free adolscenct would be especially poignant.

Number 19 unfortunately. I expect a lot of great singles stalled outside the top 10.

Had a quick look earlier but couldn't find anything.
If someone can find a link for the top twenty, I'm sure we can change the rules.

Found this link where you can view the NME year end lists for each year. I say carry on as we are but it's ok to post something from outside the top 10 as long as you check you've got the year right. After all, it takes long enough to read through the list of top 10 singles so we don't want a list that's so long it will be off-putting to read.

http://www.rocklistmusic.co.uk/1978.html

Those who want to stick to the top 10 can do so, those who want to check their recollection can do a quick google.

I couldn't find an easy reference that was wider than the top 10 (e.g. we don't want a link where you have to look at the chart for each week in the year in question!)

Has to be this, as my girlfriend at that time looked very much like Chrissie Hynde (I must have been a sucker for very dark eye shadow :lol )

Has to be this as it reminds me of my first... video recorder! (It's was a toploader). This signaled the start of me recording music on TV shows, it was the first time I heard this song and it blew me away and really got me into the Jam (I'd thought they were just ok until this point). Also on the show were Joy Division (Ian Curtis's dancing was something to behold) and John Cooper Clarke. There was also an excruciating interview with 2 local beat bobbies that began with the question "officer, why do you pick on young people"? Was tempted by Oliver's Army which wraps a fairly explicit political message up in a nice tune with Dancing Queen keyboard flourishes but this wins for the memories linked to this performance.

Ah, everybody's favourite slightly racist song about self-abuse! :lol Quite liked them as many Jam fans did (think they were managed by Foxton). Had this single but it was subsequently usurped in my affections by this version.

Easy choice for me as this as this leapt out as the clear best song in the list (despite the presence of the theme from Minder). Some great lines, "you're so anti-fashion so wear flares", "I don't believe you really like Frank Sinatra" and, particularly apt for current times, "the only way to change things is to shoot men who arrange things". Bit surprised to learn that the Wonderstuff have covered this song. {8

Another song from Nick that I quite liked but have a better cover of in my record collection. Don't think I bought the original but, for some reason, I can tell you what record label it was released on (Dindisc).

Cheers Col, just wondered if you'd decided to stop at 1980!

From the top 10 it would either be Too Nice to Talk to by the Beat of You Better, You Bet by the Who (should be the forum's National Anthem)!

I'll have a mull (not of Kintyre) and a look at the NME list.

Great stuff, Col :thumbs :thumbs .

My favourite version is from Live In Gdansk concert where Dave Gilmour had Rick Wright with him. Wright a much better vocalist than Waters, and I felt Gilmour's playing here was even better than the brief reunion concert when they all gritted their teeth to get on stage with Waters again:
