Can't argue with any of those selections, however contentious the notion of Nick as an Al Green lookalike may seem! I was going to say I didn't know the McCartney song but I did remember it when I had a listen.

Some decent but obvious Who and Stones songs in there. Apeman by the Kinks contains a line that sounds ruder than it is ("the air pollution is fogging up my eyes"). Olivia Newton John doing Dylan and Joan Baez doing the Band are decent enough and let's not forget the theme from Shaft. There's a couple of John Kongos songs in there that have been covered by Happy Mondays.

I'll go for this by the post-Ross Supremes. They did some decent songs and this was used as the intro tape by the Stone Roses for their warm-up gig ahead of their comeback a few years ago.

So we move on to 1972

One band caught my attention with their debut single that year, and I went on to gather their albums.

Roxy Music
Virginia Plain

That's a great song Col, an example of something that seems to come from nowhere. Always preferred this version though. ;-)

Not sure what I'll go with yet but it's the best year since 69 for me. The better Glam related stuff shaking things up a bit and some prime Rod, including a Hendrix cover for Nick. One obvious conclusion is that the Fenman must be the bastard son of Noddy Holder if grammar is genetic! :)

Sod it, was going to hold off for a later Mott track but can't find anything to top this for 72 as it's just so of the time. Bowie's Starman has obvious claims but at least he wrote this one so he get's a nod.

Had no recollection of Peanut's selection though it does sound vaguely familiar. A bit Slade-like perhaps. Certainly one that didn't register with me at the time.

We come to 1973 and there's not a lot of records in that list which do much for me.

You can't go wrong with a bit of Bowie.

I think that's not a bad year, feels like this is when I started really being aware of what was in the charts and I've bought quite a few of the singles at the time (this was my Sweet and Suzi Quatro phase and I also bought David Essex's Rock On). A couple of great Mott and 10cc songs in there and Cindy Incidentally is a great Faces song (my Dad was a massive fan of Rod and the Faces). With Sheet Music and it's singles to come from 10cc in 74, I'll give the honours to Rod this year. Forgive him the satin and Britt years and remember how good the early solo and Faces stuff was.

1974
And a band who had been bubbling away in the background for a couple of years, were starting to get some recognition.
They might do well for themselves.

Queen
Seven Seas Of Rhye

I can imagine what you 3 must have looked like at the time then; all flares and long barnets! My Dad had the Golden Earing LP, I do like that song. It's an easy choice for me this year, 10cc at their peak. Honourable mentions for probably the best offerings from Sparks (This Town...) and Steve Harley (Judy Teen). Dishonourable one for Terry Jacks and his desecration of the repertoire of Jaqcues Brel!

With apologies to Harry who would doubtless have chosen this too, but it was being played everywhere at the time I did my Finals. I felt that would probably be the last time I would have to take exams every year, having started with the 8 plus at the tender age of 7. It evokes my last hurrah before having to grow up and get a job.

Perhaps surprisingly, not one of my absolute favourite 10cc songs. One I appreciate more for the artistry involved in its creation than for the song itself. Check out "star" me kitten for a homage to the track by REM.

Biggest thing I took from that list is no wonder Punk is just around the corner. I was tempted to put the Frankie Valli song for amusement as I always like to sing "mice adore you" but I'm going to have to go with this. It's by no means her finest work but what a voice!

All waiting for something like punk, but for me the SAHB were one of the most underrated bands, thanks Col.

1976

Andy Fairweather Low has been on the go since 1969 and Amen Corner.
Actually seen him in concert with Eric Clapton not so long ago.

It really was a struggle to pick anything from the list :( . This one reached No.11 in 1976 so if you don't mind it will be my selection :)

Talk about flouting the chart position distancing rules! :)

Yeah, trappy year. I'm going to put 2 up, the Fox song is a cheesy delight and Scott Walker is a close to a genius as anyone in pop for me, even if this great song isn't the pinnacle of his or the "brothers'" career.

Some real dross in 1976 on that list - but I won't cheat :lol . I remember this one and reckon it still has a touch of quality:

We move onto 1977

And it's my turn to struggle with what's available.
There's a couple of stranglers and a bowie that I see but didn't really stand out.

I've picked out one, that although I never bought any of their albums, did stand out as class at the time.

Eagles - Hotel California

I agree with your comment about 1977, Col, and reckon you've picked the best one of the year. This was quite memorable at the time, so for the sake of offering something:

:v: Duffing and getting duffed these days! Had a look earlier, Nick’s queered my Stranglers pitch (my first proper favourite band) so I just need to decide whether anything can trump the Pistols. GSTQ probably the best song and certainly the one that had the most seismic effect.

It doesn't fit my vibe right now but I have to go for this as it's a great song and It's easy to forget now how much of an impact this had in Jubilee year.

1978

Again a mixture of good and bad, what strikes me is the back catalogue of ELO. Always a fan of Jeff Lynne, and Roy wood going back further.

My selection for this year is more a memory, Picture it.
Me and my mates in a very busy pub, enjoying a pint or two.
As usual for a thursday night, top of the pops was on the TV.

When this track came on, the whole bar went silent, and the pints placed back on the bar.
