Cheers Col, just wondered if you'd decided to stop at 1980!

From the top 10 it would either be Too Nice to Talk to by the Beat of You Better, You Bet by the Who (should be the forum's National Anthem)!

I'll have a mull (not of Kintyre) and a look at the NME list.

Released as a single in 1980, but I can't seem to find where it got to in the charts

The fantastic Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb

Great stuff, Col :thumbs :thumbs .

My favourite version is from Live In Gdansk concert where Dave Gilmour had Rick Wright with him. Wright a much better vocalist than Waters, and I felt Gilmour's playing here was even better than the brief reunion concert when they all gritted their teeth to get on stage with Waters again:

Hmm, pondering my selection like a chess move, might have to have a look at the more esoteric non-top 10 stuff that was floating my boat that year. Tempted by Dexys and the Jockie Wilson picture for the humour value, The Jam's last hurrah with Beat Surrender (their split was a big deal for me at the time), Strange Little Girl by the Stranglers as just been listening to Tori Amos's version or Being Boiled by the Human League which taught us all so much about the production of silk. Be back later.

Was tempted by the Clash's Straight to Hell but have plumped for this as the raw energy and anger just transported me back to the time. Don't think anyone will be adding this to their playlist but hey ho! "The peasants are hungry Mags, let them eat shit!"

1983

And we have some truly shocking entries
Led by Keith Harris and Orville's Song, and not to mention Too Shy by fookin kajaggoogle or whatever they were called.

Expected bigger things from this band after their debut, but it didn't happen.

Bit of a struggle but the NME list pointed me in the direction of this brilliant pop song. I probably wasn't aware of it at the time but subsequently became a big fan of the band (another bunch of Aussies). This was the year when my musical tastes were transitioning from "punk" to "indie" if you were looking for simple labels. Spear of Destiny were probably my favourite fumctioning band at this point but didn't really release a classic single this year.

:thumbs Closest they cam to a hit was with a song called Streets of Your Town a couple of years later, you may well have heard that on the radio.

I know Man o' Sand well now but didn't know it at the time, getting into them slightly later. I wouldn't have known it was 83 until I saw it on the NME list and it was an easy pick for me after that as nothing else was floating my boat.

Have to go with this as they were my favourite band for a while and, brielfy, the one I'd seen most often live. Might have picked Liberator or Rainmaker as preferred track but this is the only one with a video so I've gone with this. Fairly catchy pop song with a nod to Northern Soul which perhaps should have made a bit more of a dent in the charts.

Looking back on this year was the most evocative for me so far, as if it was the year I got deeper into music and my record buying and gig going really started to take off. Names to conjure with include Bogshed, Swans, The Triffids, The Jesus and Mary Chain and The Stone Roses. Easy pick for me though, saw this on the Whistle Test at the time. It's a bit of a cliche to say that a song, album or band changed your life but this is one of small number of instances where it at least comes close for me.

It is fairly depressing top 10 wise! I've gone with this because, at the time, it was huge for me as a Clash fan. Liked this band enough to go and see them in Aylesbury. Didn't quite like them enough to carry on to Cornwall for the next night though and went home! :)

Could've gone with Col's compatriots The Shop Assistants and Safety Net. Saw them on a Friday night at the International in Manchester and then the next day at the Womad festival near Bristol. Bottled asking them if I could have a lift down there! Could've gone with Therese by the Bodines, a really great pop song. Sonic Youth caught my eye as well and would have been amusing to post the Swans song called Time is Money (Bastard) but BAD it is.
