Firestick Query

Post by harry_rag » Sat Mar 21, 2020 7:09 pm

Leaving aside the more “exotic” use they can be put to, am I right in thinking these can be used just to turn a “dumb” TV into a smart one?

Thinking I could get my mum one so she can have catch up TV etc, assume they work for that, just plug it into a HDMI socket? I believe they might get enough power from that or there’s a mains adaptor if not.

Let me know if I’m barking up the wrong tree.

Yeah, you can do that harry. She would need to have broadband though
and it would have to be plugged into the mains as well.

Cheers Col, she’s got broadband & the TV I had before I “went smart”. She’s got Freeview and a Humax recorder but I was thinking having iPlayer etc would give her a bit more to watch.

Can you use it just via the remote if you don’t want to use the voice control feature?

Yeah, you don't need to use the voice control at all.

I can also pass on a free cinema app that you can download for her. Loads of good movies on it.

Cheers Col, I’ll probably take you up on that once I’ve got one and got it up and running.

Took the plunge and ordered one, got it from Curry's via ebay with 15% off. Should arrive tomorrow.

I'll shout if I struggle with the set-up but should be fine. Just hoping it's easy enough for my mum to use. Should be ok given she made the transition from video to Humax recorder ok and does alright with tablet and smartphone basics.
